PISFCC attends UN Youth Climate Summit
PISFCC was proud to have two members awarded ‘green tickets’ by the United Nations enabling them to attend the first ever UN Youth Climate Summit, joingin youth climate activists from all around the world. Only 100 green tickets were given out. PISFCC’s President Solomon Yeo and Treasurer Lani Lavemai embarked on an exciting journey to the other side of the world to attend this historic event.
Ms. Lavemai said ‘the UN Youth Summit was empowering as we were surrounded by youth who are coming all around the world with inspiring initiatives and strong messages. We got to witness Ms Greta Thunberg’s powerful speeches and I will remember that forever. It was really inspiring’.
The PISFCC team also participated in the FridayForFuture climate strike in New York. Mr. Yeo stated that it was the biggest strike he ever participated in his life and was full of energy. At the strike the PISFCC team met up with close partners I am Climate Justice who are another group of climate activists also advocating for an ICJ AO spearheaded by committed young individuals mentored by the famous environmental lawyer Tony Oposa. We are thankful for having them fighting alongside us. A special thanks goes to Ms. Robin Happel for her support and guidance to the team.
The PISFCC team also met with several Pacific island government delegates. We also made strong connections with other young Pacific activists from all over the region.
PISFCC would like to thank deeply the Fiji, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu mission delegations, and the Pacific youth team for their time and support. PISFCC also extends our deepest gratitude to Ms. Rose Kautoke from the Tongan mission for her outstanding support to the team.
Mr. Yeo said ‘these are truly exciting times to witness so many youth dedicating their lives to fight for their future. Sometimes working on climate change can be tough, but the people we met and the things we witnessed in New York gave us hope for the future’. The event was a wonderful experience for the team and will significantly boost PISFCC’s ambitions for coming year.
