PISFCC hosts high-level symposium with University of the South Pacific
On the 02nd of June, Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change hosted a symposium with the University of the South Pacific titled ‘Navigating Pacific Climate Justice to the UN General Assembly’.
The Symposium saw eminent legal professionals, Pacific experts, campaigners join together to discuss the campaign to seek an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice. The panelists included:
Dr Claire Slatter (Independent Development Consultant, former Lecturer at The University of the South Pacific)
Reverend James Bhagwan (General Secretary of the Pacific Conferences of Churches)
Professor Jorge Viñuales (Harold Samuel Chair of Law and Environmental Policy at the University of Cambridge)
Vishal Prasad (USP Alumni and PISFCC Campaigner)
The event highlighted the past achievements of Pacific countries in shaping international institutions - especially in climate change and ocean governance as well as discussed a globally-significant initiative currently being championed by Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change and their civil society partners.
How could an International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion force a sea change in the narratives of global climate justice?
What are the benefits of putting human rights at the centre of global climate change debates
How could this initiative - being presented to the UN General Assembly by the Government of Vanuatu in 2022 - lead to faster action and greater ambition within the framework of the Paris Agreement?
